Meter Readings

Gas meters are available in many different types and are chosen for the specific application intended. Gas meters for residential customers are generally small, diaphragm types with an index attached to provide a read-out of the uncorrected volume of gas which has passed through the meter.

The reading index will generally state the value as cubic metres. Larger meters may be of a diaphragm, rotary or turbine type and will all have indexes attached to provide a read-out of the uncorrected volume of gas which has passed through the meter.

In all cases, the readings will have to be corrected by a meter factor to state the consumption of the meter as standard cubic metres of gas at the internationally agreed conditions.

Reading your meter

It is important when reading a gas meter to always read all the digits on the index. It is also important to correctly note the position of the decimal point. This will be shown on the index. Most but not all indexes will have two positions past the decimal point.

This index would read as nine, nine, nine, nine point nine, eight, seven.

If required, you may be asked to provide a meter reading to the company to verify the consumption at your home or business. This may be necessary if the company meter reader was unable to gain access to read your meter on the appropriate date. Read the meter and record all digits as shown above. In addition, the meter will have a serial number affixed to the side of the meter. Record this serial number and provide it along with the meter reading to ensure that the records associate the meter reading with the correct metering device.
